How to choose cardboard boxes?

Before any move, the main elements are the cardboard boxes. There are special ones to transport crockery, documents,,,,, or clothes; those that protect your objects from humidity; those with double bottom; or those that have handles to make the transfer easier.

However, boxes are not the only accessories you will need during your move. Also use products to ensure the closure and protection of your belongings (adhesive tapes, packing paper or sleeve, bubble wrap …) or those that will help you better label and organize your transfer.

The keys

Limit the weight of the boxes to 20 kg maximum. Check that they do not bulge, nor does the closing seal open.

Reserve some boxes to store a “survival kit.” Essential items in your new home: basic hygiene products, medicines you should take, a change…

Store objects from one room in the same box and, if there are empty spaces, fill them with crumpled paper, bubble wrap,,, or filler balls.

Box selection criteria

Once you are clear about all the objects you want to take with you, the first thing you have to know is the types of cardboard boxes you can count on and what to use them for.

Before purchasing your boxes keep the following aspects in mind:

  • Easy to assemble and close: buy those with a bottom and automatic closing. You will save time when assembling them and you will not need a tape dispenser to close them.
  • With side handles: They facilitate transport.
  • Reusable: choose those that are foldable since you can store them without taking up space and reuse them at another time.

There are boxes of different sizes, as well as specific ones for plates or glasses. Use the larger ones for packing oversized items like duvet covers, sheets, or blankets, and the smaller ones for smaller items like books, shoes, or bags. However, never exceed the maximum weight of 20 kg per box to ensure the strength of the box and facilitate transport.

As for the specific boxes, you can find:

  • To archive documents. There are two types: with front opening, to store filing cabinets, or with hanging folders, to store documents in them in an orderly manner.
  • Double bottom. By having a double cardboard base, they are more resistant. They are indicated for both heavy products (for their resistance) and for fragile products (for their stronger protection against external blows that the box may suffer).
  • To transport clothes. Choose for this case those tall boxes, which have a bar where you can hang your clothes. The base can be used to store shoes, underwear, or a small pile of sweaters.

Packing accessories

  • Adhesive tape: transparent polypropylene adhesive suitable for sealing packing boxes.
  • “Fragile” adhesive tape: polypropylene adhesive with VERY FRAGILE legend to mark fragile boxes or packaging.
  • Kraft adhesive tape: brown craft paper adhesive, suitable for closing packing boxes.
  • Cling film: roll of polyethylene cling film for packaging.
  • Black film: roll of black polyethylene film for packaging. It is used to hide the content and protect it from UV rays.
  • Tape Applicator – Tape dispenser machine for easy application.

Protection products

  • Bubble wrap roll: suitable for packing any delicate object and protecting it from shocks. It is sold in rolls of different dimensions.
  • Foam roll: useful for packing delicate items.
  • Corrugated cardboard roll: ideal for packaging flat, delicate, wooden, or ceramic objects.
  • Moving blanket: made of the fiber cloth, it is specific for protecting furniture.
  • Corner pieces: to protect the corners of various fragile objects such as paintings, mirrors, glass … They adapt to different thicknesses.
  • Plastic covers to protect sofas, mattresses, or armchairs from scuffs, scratches, and stains. You will also preserve them from dust and water.
  • Filler sack: a bag of starch balls to fill the gaps in the boxes and prevent objects from hitting each other.
  • Separators for glasses, cups, and plates, that you can add to your boxes to transport your dishes in compartments. For added security, wrap each piece in a foam bag if necessary.

Some advice

  • Before the move, plan your move in advance, to avoid last-minute surprises. Calculate well the number of boxes you will need and always have ten more to avoid surprises.
  • Move the objects that you really use and throw away or donate those that are already old or unused. Take the opportunity to clean cabinets.
  • Prepare a survival kit for each member of the house: place the essential items (toothbrush, a change of clothes, or utensils that you use in your daily life) in a box.
  • Prioritize the boxes: you should label the boxes with the essential items (basic kitchen utensils, bathroom accessories …) with the label OPEN FIRST so that you follow a structured order when unpacking.
  • Valuables: always carry them with you.
  • Pack appliances and electronic equipment with padded material (bubble wrap, foam roll) to avoid scratches or breakage.
  • Furniture: protect it with corner pieces and a moving blanket.
  • Pictures and mirrors: place them vertically and between the mattresses inside the moving truck and protect them from blows with corner pieces and padding.
